Habib Umar has an intense concern to raise religious consciousness in the City of Tarim. He has established many gatherings, the most important of which is the weekly Monday gathering, which is conducted in the town square of Tarim and is attended by hundreds of the city’s inhabitants. He also has made countless visits to the various regions of Yemen and has conducted many lectures in Yemeni universities, institutes and organisations.
He established al-Ra`fah Foundation in 1418 (1998), which sponsors students of sacred knowledge, teachers, orphans and widows and assists the poor and needy in the Hadramawt region. When severe floods struck Hadramawt in 2008, al-Ra`fah played a key role in relieving the suffering of those who lost their homes and property.
He took license to narrate from the chains of transmission in Hadith and in other sciences from the narrator of connected chains, Shaykh Muhammad Yasin al-Faddani and Muhammad bin Alawi al-Maliki, as well as other scholars.
Habib`Umar’s students can be found throughout the world calling people to Allah. Many have opened their own institutions.
Habib`Ali al-Jifri has made numerous expeditions around the world and established the Tabah Foundation in Abu Dhabi.
Habib Kazim al-Saqqaf, Habib Muhammad`Abd al-Rahman al-Saqqaf and Habib Husayn al-Saqqaf are well known for their efforts calling people to Allah.
Shaykh`Umar Husayn al-Khatib, through his teaching role in Dar al- Mustafa and through his travels, has benefited countless people. Habib`Umar’s students have also had a big impact in South East Asia. This is reflected by the thousands of people that attend the gatherings of the late Habib Mundhir al-Musawa (may Allah have mercy on him) in Jakarta.

His Eminence Ahmed Al-Tayeb is the grand imam of Egypt's Al-Azhar. He is widely regarded as a preeminent Sunni Muslim religious leader in the world and has served as the grand imam of Egypt’s Al-Azhar (the chief center of Islamic and Arabic learning in the world) for over a decade. His Eminence Professor Al-Tayeb is the chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, considered to be the first independent international authority to enhance peace among Muslims and between Muslims and non-Muslims. In 2019, Grand Imam Al-Tayeb made history alongside Pope Francis when they came together to sign and launch the Document on Human Fraternity, arguably the most important bilateral interfaith document of modern times.
Based in Egypt’s capital, Cairo, Al Azhar is the most prestigious educational facility for those who enter the field of Islamic jurisprudence and learning. Al Azhar and its network of 9,000 schools across Egypt is attended by two million students.
One of the world’s oldest universities, Al Azhar was re-established during President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s reign when non-religious subjects were added to its curriculum in 1961 transforming it from an Islamic learning facility, to a fully fledged university.
In 2013, Azhar also made reforms to its curriculum, moving away from outdated passages towards teachings that are more compatible with the modern age.
Sheikh Al-Tayyeb has emphasised his mission to promote traditional Islam since becoming Grand Sheikh. He has stressed the importance of teaching students about Islamic heritage—considering Al-Azhar graduates as ambassadors of Islam to the world. In an age where claimants to authoritative Islam seem to be on every corner, Sheikh Al-Tayyeb has both the institute and the personal skills to authentically claim to be a representative of traditional Islam, Islam as practiced by the majority of Muslims throughout the ages. Sheikh Al-Tayyeb has defined the Sunni community (Ahl Al-Sunnah wa Al-Jama’a) as those who follow Imam Abul-Hasan Al-Ash’ari and Imam Abu Mansur Al-Maturidi and the scholars of Hanafi, Maliki, and Shafi’i jurisprudence, as well as the moderate scholars of the Hanbali school. He also included the Sufis following the way of Imam Al-Junayd.
